Village planning Memorial Day celebration at Deering Estate

The Village of Palmetto Bay is teaming with the Deering Estate on Saturday, May 25, to honor, remember and celebrate those who gave their lives for our freedom.

This is the inaugural year for “Palmetto Bay at Deering Memorial Day Celebration.” Through a partnership agreement between the village and the Deering Estate, Palmetto Bay residents, veterans and active duty military personnel will be able to enjoy the festivities at the historic venue free of charge. Deering Estate Foundation members also will be admitted free.

The day will feature a military parade at 1 p.m., including the St. Andrews Pipe and Drums and the Miami Palmetto Senior High School Marching Band. There also willbe other performances by local talent, a deejay, kids’ activities, house tours and kayak and nature hikes. The featured act of the afternoon is the Hal Roland Jazz Band.

Special “On the Bay” Adventures will be available for purchase the day of the event. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs.

“Miami-Dade County is proud to be home to over 50,000 military veterans and families and over 300 reside in our beautiful Village of Palmetto Bay,” said Mayor Karyn Cunningham. “What better way to celebrate and remember those who have served our country than a good old fashioned parade, picnic and jazz concert in one of our county gems right here in Palmetto Bay, Deering Estate. I hope all our residents come out and learn more about Deering and celebrate the Memorial Day weekend with us.”

Palmetto Bay residents will be required to show proof of residency. Tickets for non-residents will be for sale at $7, adults and children. All proceeds benefit the Deering Estate Foundation, supporting conservation, culture and community.
