Palmetto Bay has a number of events scheduled for residents as part of its Earth Week celebration, taking place at various village parks.
The first is on Sunday, Apr. 19, and is a Bird Watching Workshop called “Beak, Feet and Feathers.” It’s at the Thalatta Estate, 17301 Old Cutler Rd., and the workshop begins at 9 a.m.
Yoelly Burgos-Munoz, president and founder of Nature Postings Inc., will conduct a 30-minute hands-on presentation and 2.5-hour bird watching tour around Thalatta and surrounding areas. A bird guide for each participant and binoculars for use during the session will be provided, and the workshop will be open free to the public for all skill levels and ages.
The traditional ladybug releases will take place at area schools from Monday, Apr. 20, through Wednesday, Apr. 22, and also on Apr. 22 is a tree planting ceremony at a school to be determined by a poster contest in which all fifth grade students have been invited to participate. All entries will be judged by designated Tree Board members and results will be posted on the Village of Palmetto Bay’s website.
On Thursday, Apr. 23 is the Parks and Books Read-Aloud with the Village Council, at Ludovici Park, 17641 Old Cutler Rd., in the Edward and Arlene Feller Community Room. The Parks Department, working with the Miami- Dade County Library Palmetto Bay Branch, organized a “Going Green at your Library” read-aloud, with signing and arts and craft activities.
On Friday, Apr. 24 is the Encounters in Excellence Lecture “You, Me, and the Sea” at Thalatta Estate. Richard S. Kern, a noted wildlife filmmaker who has been presenting his travel-adventure films around the United States for more than 35 years, will host a short documentary film presentation with live narration and a Q&A session to follow.
Gardeners take note, on Saturday, Apr. 25 at Ludovici Park, the Parks Department is hosting a Tree Giveaway for Palmetto Bay residents only. From 9 a.m. to noon residents can stop by Ludovici Park and pick up a free tree.
On Saturday, Apr. 25, in conjunction with the Town of Cutler Bay, is the “Bike- B-Que” at Ludovici Park at 1 p.m. Later that night it’s Movie Night at Coral Reef Park, featuring the film Rio 2 under the stars, with residents being invited to bring their blankets and lawn chairs. Food will be available for purchase.
