Pictured are students from Pinecrest Elementary who won first place for their PowerPoint presentation on Environmental Action in the 12th annual Fairchild Challenge Awards Ceremony for Elementary School students for the 2013-14 school year. More than 250 teachers, parents and students attended the ceremonies. About 125,000 students from 273 schools in South Florida from Pre K-12 participated in the Fairchild Challenge, a multidisciplinary educational program and competition created by Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Coral Gables. The overall top scoring elementary school was the Air Base K-8 Center in Homestead, while La Scuola in South Dade placed second and the Phyllis Ruth Miller Montessori Elementary in North Miami was third.
