The notice read: Get ready to dance and sing along with the hits at the Tribute to Fania, presented by Koubek Center in its Little Havana Social Club program with Mimy Succar and the Mixtura Orchestra under the direction of two-time Latin GRAMMY Award-winning percussionist, producer, composer and arranger Tony Succar, with the participation of musician, producer and DJ Mr. Pauer. You might want to go.
On Saturday, March 18, at the Koubek Center beginning theoretically at 8 p.m. But you know this is Miami, so an event with major under the radar appeal will take place in a venue with major under the radar appeal. As the Miami Dade College’s humble press release states: “Koubek’s Little Havana Social Club signature program channels the spirit of a fiesta de barrio (neighborhood party), informed by the many sounds and flavors of Latin American and Caribbean traditions but with a twist of contemporary Miami.” Tickets are $15 purchased online in advance, and $20 at the door.
The lawn and gardens at the Koubek are a treasure sadly underutilized by people like me who love atmosphere, but this time, heat willing, a great time will be had by all.
It isn’t Mother’s Day, but March 18 will be Tony Succar’s Mother’s Day. Mimy Succar, mother of Peruvian percussionist Tony Succar, is the headliner. Other articles have mentioned her age, but not wanting to be confused with Don Lemon, let me say that nobody here is past her prime.
Fresh out of the jury of Peru has talent, Mama Succar is doing something special with her son and his band. Tony Succar said it like this: “I bring you a new single with my mom, Mimy! This time, we unite for the party, the ‘sabor’ and the joy of Pa’lante un pie, a song that celebrates and pays tribute to our Afro-Peruvian culture, highlighting the most representative rhythm: the festejo. Pa’lante un pie is already the third single from my mom’s album, Mimy Succar, the lyrics are an inspiration and the example to follow that I have always had from her, who has always shown me that you have to go Pa’ lante.”
Mimy’s son is no ordinary Salsero. His Latin covers of Michael Jackson and Silk Sonic are way beyond the traditional route to airplay. Here, his mom is getting deep into the salsa dura style which FANIA RECORDS made so sensational beginning in the 1950’s with artists like Celia Cruz. Then came Pete Rodriguez in the 60’s along with the Fania all-Stars. The 70’s brought us solo efforts by Hector Lavoe and Willie Colon and the rest is history, just more reasons why Puerto Rico should have achieved statehood decades ago. With its New York, Dominican, Miami, Puerto-Rican, Cuban roots, Fania set a table on which everyone wanted to eat.
Over the years, the Little Havana Social Club has featured a number of fine neighborhood parties. This one should prove to be the latest.
