HORTICULTURE

Late winter (and spring) is a great time for viewing the xeriscape plantings by Swan Lake and the Meadow Garden at Pinecrest Gardens. Rain-free days with lower humidity bring out the succulents’ colors. Many aloes respond to the dry season by intensifying their leaf patterns and blooming. Various agave species are giving off chemical signals, stimulating group production of their once-in-a-lifetime flower spikes. The Desert Roses have dropped their leaves and are beginning to respond to the lengthening days by shyly blooming, opening a few red flowers here and there. They will explode with color with the first heavy rains.

Horticulture staff have been working intensively, redesigning two areas. In one, the stream that feeds the Lower Gardens pond system has been cleared and extended. A network of above-ground irrigation pipes has been removed and a curving streambed created. The musical sounding stream rushes around rocks and under the buttress roots of a large native Strangler Fig tree, delivering naturally oxygenated water to the ponds. Additional planting is ongoing to complement the rare palms and aroids already there. The Caribbean Garden area has also been extensively redesigned, thanks to the generous support of The Garden Fund. Overgrown and inappropriately sited plants have been removed, replaced by a dramatically colorful planting of bromeliads, large anthuriums, and a low groundcover.

The new installation can be viewed from the middle path or from the Reclining Lady sculpture near the Historic Entrance.

Although most home gardeners delight in working in their landscapes during South Florida’s glorious winters, the horticulture staff at Pinecrest Gardens use the rising temperatures and longer days of spring and early summer to complete major planting projects; the plants say “Bring on the heat!”
