Hyundai IONIQ 5 offers future driving today

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 starts at more than $52,000 for the Limited trim, which is the high end of this all-electric vehicle.

What you see first when you get in is the two-spoke steering wheel, which feels like the engineers drew from nostalgia as much as their imagination for inspiration.

The EV has two 12.3-inch screens that were designed as a single unit, which makes it feel like it comes from tomorrow. Behind the wheel, the cabin feels wide and everything is convenient. The screens are big and crisp like you are at a movie theater. The IONIQ 5 also has augmented reality for navigation, which adds a layer of technology that is useful and exciting. Driving around with this feature makes missing a turn nearly impossible.

The estimated range on a charge is more than 300 miles for the rear wheel drive and 256 miles for the all-wheel drive. That means you can take a trip to Walt Disney World and get nearly a third of the way back without having to charge. This is a comfortable car so you might not get out the whole time.

The engine also packs a punch, generating 320 horsepower and 446 pound-feet of torque in the all-wheel drive. That gets you to 60 miles per hour in a startling 5.2 seconds.

The IONIQ 5 is just the first of Hyundai’s series of exclusively electric vehicles. They are all built on the same ingenious Electric Global Modular Platform (e-GMP). Hyundai says that it is flexible enough to be used for all kinds of electric vehicles and is engineered with cutting-edge battery technology that continues to make the car company one to watch. All of this creativity means IONIQ 5 can even be used as a power source for bigger electronic devices and appliances and is one of the few EVs that can support 800-volt ultra-fast charging.

Speaking of charging, the IONIQ 5 has the highest all-electric range of any Hyundai. And it’s one of the fastest charging electric vehicles out there. In fact, just 5 minutes at an 800V ultra-fast charger gets you 68 miles of range.

Braking can actually extend your driving range. When you coast or brake, the regenerative brakes convert the wheels’ rotations into electricity, which is stored in the battery for future use. Control paddles behind the steering wheel let you choose from four levels of regenerative braking. Activate the smart regenerative system and it automatically adjusts the regenerative braking level according to the speed and distance of the vehicle in front of you.

I really enjoyed driving this SUV. Give a drive and let us know what you think.
