My wife Dr. Judi Woolger, our five children and I enjoy our beautiful parks, excellent schools and family friendly atmosphere. What we have is certainly worth preserving, protecting and enhancing.

I’ve served my country, community and Pinecrest for all of my adult life. I am a United States Air Force veteran and a retired South Florida firefighter/paramedic. In addition, I serve on the executive committee with the Special Olympics-Dade County, the Pinecrest Zoning Board and the Pinecrest Gardens Advisory Committee.

One of the most urgent challenges the Village faces is how to meet the county standard of having a fire hydrant within 700 feet of each home.

We must begin working immediately with Commissioner Suarez, the Miami-Dade County mayor and the Water and Sewer Department so that the county installs the proper number of correctly spaced fire hydrants in Pinecrest. It’s hard to believe that after nearly 20 years, the Village continues to have nearly 850 homes without hydrants within an approved distance.

At the same time, I am aware that the county six years ago granted a 10-year moratorium on forced hook-ups for homeowners wishing to retain their well water. During my time on the council, I expect to fight for these homeowners to extend that moratorium.

My family can envision all sorts of things to spend money on, but we must set priorities and spend wisely. In September, the Village Council approved raising taxes in order to float a $5 million bond that would expand the Community Center. While this might be a nice enhancement, I believe fixing serious drainage problems, particularly where homes are flooding, should enjoy a higher priority. I would urge my colleagues to move forward with fixing a few hot spots immediately rather than wait for the results of a community- wide study available in April, 2015.

Also, I wish to pursue establishment of a family neighborhood restaurant in Pinecrest Gardens.

I will take all residents’ concerns seriously and approach them with thorough commonsense leadership. Call me at 305-812-6837 if you have any additional concerns.
