A donor fund has been set up through the Miami Foundation to collect money to build a memorial garden in Pinecrest Gardens in memory of Steven Sotloff, who grew up here and his family continues to reside in the Village.
Donors may send a check donation to The Miami Foundation at 200 South Biscayne Boulevard, Suite 505, Miami, FL 33131. Include the fund name — The Steven Sotloff Memorial at Pinecrest Gardens Fund — in the memo line. Donations can also be made with a credit card online at The Miami Foundation website http://bit.ly/SotloffMemorial.
Sotloff was a freelance journalist murdered by Islamic state militants on Sept. 2. He was the second U.S. journalist executed, causing an international outcry.
He went missing in August 2013 while writing about the Syrian civil war as a freelance journalist for several publications, including Time, the Christian Science Monitor, The National Interest, Media Line, World Affairs and Foreign Policy. He also has appeared on CNN and Fox News. His work took him to Syria several times, as well as Egypt, Turkey, Libya and Bahrain.
Sotloff was the son of Shirley and Arthur Sotloff and a grandson of Holocaust survivors.
