Westminster Christian School senior Daniel Fernandez expects to play football in college.
He’s an outstanding outside linebacker and has been a starter for four years. Fernandez has been talking to several colleges and already has offers from Georgetown, Davidson, and Stetson. He’s still talking to other schools, including Columbia, Yale and Villanova. He will go in as a Business and Marketing major.
He’s not just a football star – Fernandez plays small forward for the basketball team.
“Last year our basketball team lost in the regionals, but we went toe to toe with two teams that ended up state champions,” he says. “It was Cinderella type of thing.”
This year’s team is young with only three seniors expected to play. Fernandez expects to be a starter this year.
He’s also on the track and field team, participating in shotput events.
“I placed top ten in regionals this past spring,” he says.
His love of sports is one of the reasons he volunteered at the various summer sports camps at Westminster.
“The football camps,” he says. “That sport is my passion. The experience of sharing myself with the kids keeps me coming back. A lot of the kids come, they are elementary kids, they come up to me and say, ‘what’s up.’ It makes me feel I’ve been a positive force on them. It keeps me coming back.”
He normally volunteers four weeks out of the six available.
“Every week that I am here, I volunteer,” he says.
He’d go to the camps in the morning and take part in any sports practices he would have, he’d do afterward.
His volunteer work includes participating in events for the Ari Arteaga Foundation – Be the Light.
At school, he’s a member of the National English Honor Society, Rho Kappa, Mu Alph Theta, the National World Language Honor Society, the treasurer of the National Science Honor Society, the National Business Honor Society, and president of the National Honor Society.
As president of NHS, he wants the club to have more involvement in school activities.
He’s also a member of Student Leadership and the lead Student Ambassador.
Student Leadership members plan and organize school events from Homecoming to Prom.
“The Student Leadership takes a role in all the student related activities,” he says. “We plan and organize all events from homecoming to prom, including Warrior Week. We get things done.”
As a student ambassador, he speaks at all the open houses.
“When I lead the tours my favorite thing to do is talk to the parents,” he says. “I like to go up to each one and ask their thoughts. I like to tell them about myself. They know how involved I am, and why I do things, and what a blessing it is to do things.”
Fernandez says his goal is to keep the prospective parents and students interested and maybe help them fall in love with the school.
He also touts the relationship that the school helps the students with Christ. The religious aspect is one of the reasons that parents choose the school for their kids.
Fernandez volunteers at Arise Miami, a local church. He does a lot of work with the youth ministry, although he regularly attends Christ Journey.
“The church I volunteer at, the pastor is childhood friends with my father,” he says, adding that his mom was the head of the youth ministry.
He worked with kids aged four to ten.
“The ones that can’t sit still during the services,” he says.
