Miami Palmetto Senior High School junior Justin Corman recently returned from a BBYO International Convention in Dallas.
He says the convention was an amazing experience.
“It all started from the first moment I arrived at the hotel,” he says. “The experience was something you witness once in a lifetime and it was surreal. I met people from all over the world, as far away as Ukraine and every single teen was amazing and friendly.”
The conference was a gathering of teens involved with the Jewish youth organization BBYO.
“I was nominated for the Shield of David Award, which in my disbelief, I won this amazing accomplishment, showcasing all my hard work in my community towards BBYO,” Corman says.
Corman says the award recognizes Alephs who have made outstanding leadership contributions, displayed a consistent commitment to the fraternity that is AZA and have shown that they exemplify the principles of the Aleph Zadik Aleph holds dear.
“The Shield of David Award is awarded to Alephs who have gone above and beyond in the achievements fulfilling the duties of office at any level of the Aleph Zadik Aleph, acting as an event coordinator of member of a planning committee, contributing to the Aleph’s chapter and fulfilling his responsibility of giving the experience of AZA to others through recruitment.”
Locally, Corman is the Regional Godol which is president of the region that encompasses Miami Beach and as far south as the Pinecrest area.
“In the Miami region, we have weekly meetings for the boys and the girls every Tuesday,” he says.
Last year he was the Godol of the Hurricanes chapter at the local JCC in Kendall.
The next step may be election to be the International Godol, which would be the top president for all the regions in the world, a step he is considering although it would mean taking a gap year and starting college a year later.
At Palmetto, Corman plays second base and shortstop for the varsity baseball team. He does hope to play baseball in college, depending on which school he attends.
One of the hallmarks of Palmetto baseball is the community service the team does. This year they volunteered to help the local Miracle League at the opening game.
“We taught them to field and throw,” he says. “We made sure they were having a good time. It was an awesome atmosphere to be a part of. They felt included, which is something that was very important.”
Corman is also Head Athletic Producer for the Palmetto Television Production program. He films Palmetto sporting events. Occasionally some of his pictures end up on the athletic Instagram account and are used by the yearbook.
“Since my specialty is sports, any sports on the daily broadcast, I write a story for the anchors to read,” he says.
He also produces videos to promote school spirit and urge students to attend sporting events.
Corman is also a member of the Jewish Student Union and Key Club.
Because of all the things he does, he’s learned time management so he can ensure he gets everything done.
Although it’s still early, Corman is already thinking about college. He is considering majoring in sports administration or journalism. The process of visiting prospective schools has already started. Schools he’s toured include the University of Florida, Wake Forest, Duke, and the University of South Florida.
While baseball is his sport, he played a different sport at the Maccabi Games in San Diego.
“I played baseball my whole life but I participated on the basketball team for the Miami delegation,” he says.
