Art lovers will want to clear the weekend of Feb 22-23 for the 31st Annual South Miami Rotary Art Festival. Look for road closures on Sunset Drive from US 1 to Red Road adjacent to The Shops at Sunset Place. South Miami Rotarians expect another great turn out with great arts and crafts, food, entertainment and more. Admission is free admission and there is ample nearby parking on-street and in garages. Look for more than 150 outstanding artists whose works will be on display and for sale, an expanded food court and beer garden as well as jazz onstage. Speaking of art shows, Coconut Grove was certainly the place to be Feb. 15- 17, with the St. Stephens Art Show, part of the larger Coconut Grove Art Festival. In preparation for that weekend, on Feb. 6th, a large crowd gathered at St. Stephens for the unveiling of their 25th anniversary show poster, “Sunset on the Past’, a piece that depicted a sense of time and a sense of change. The structure in the poster is a jetty that was built in the 1950s for erosion control. Artist Eric Clay notes that the jetty represents a choice that we all have to make in our lives of being standing rigid against the tides of change or going with the flow and adapting. Clay suggests it is important to remember this when deciding how we will live our lives and the legacy that we will leave.
Celebrating their 10th Anniversary, Go Red for Women held a breakfast on February 6 for Miami-Dade and Broward to celebrate. The crowd was also introduced to the 2014 Chair, Natalie Baro, and also heard from 2013 Chair Gabrielle Finley-Hazl, CEO Florida Medical Center a campus of North Shore. Several sponsors, board members and supporters enjoyed a beautiful breakfast program at Hillcrest Country Club in Hollywood the features heart transplant survivor, Dr. Renee Kilpatrick, a professor of English at Miami Dade College. Telling her story brought tears as well as a standing ovation from her very appreciative audience.
Among the crowd were several people from Tenet Healthcare including their new hire, Christy Paez, the former Executive Director of AHA who replaces Jennifer Evans. Evans moves has been promoted to Tenet’s corporate offices in Dallas and attended this breakfast as one of her final Go Red events before leaving for her next challenge.
Casino Night for the GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club will be held on March 8 at their clubhouse on 1009 East Ponce de Leon Blvd. in Coral Gables. Tickets are only $50 and include great food and entertainment. There will be a cash bar and an opportunity to bid on terrific prizes at the silent auction during the affair.
For those interested in getting involved in community service, this is also a perfect opportunity to meet members and support the club’s free children dental clinic.
