The temperatures get chilly and the year gets off to a fresh start

The Engineer Corps comes to town… representatives from the United States Army Corps of Engineers-USACE—coming in all the way from Norfolk, VA—joined Cutler Bay Town Manager Rafael Casals and Building and Code Compliance Manager Santiago Gonzalez to tour the Biscayne Bay Coastal Wetlands (BBCW) Restoration Project located on SW 184 Street and Old Cutler Road, along with representatives from the Florida Department of Transportation, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and Miami-Dade County Government’s Department of Environmental and Resources Management.

Off to see state leaders… As of this writing, Palmetto Bay’s Mayor Cunningham and members of Council were in Tallahassee to meet with state lawmakers representing Palmetto Bay and members of the Florida House Appropriations Committee, “to discuss items contained in this year’s legislative agenda.” We’ll find out soon how the visit went, and we hope it was productive.

Congratulations to Interim Village Manager Greg Truitt. Mr. Truitt is, for now, the chief administrative officer for the Village of Palmetto Bay. In this capacity, he oversees and manages all village personnel and departmental operations, including Community & Economic Development, Finance, Human Resources & Communications, Parks & Recreation, and the Policing Unit. Mr. Truitt is accountable to the Village Council and is responsible for carrying out the policies and directives of the Council. No municipal jobs are easy, so we wish him well.

Shred-a-Thon… The Town of Cutler Bay is hosting a “Shred-a-Thon” on February 8 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Cutler Bay Town Center, South Parking Lot, 10720 Caribbean Boulevard. The object is to help protect against the crime of identity theft, a common problem.

“Bring your confidential documents for FREE and SAFE destruction and recycling. Shred away identity fraud by safely disposing of your personal documents, check stubs, credit card offers, receipts, outdated medical records, and any other material that might contain sensitive data. No registration required.” Be sure to remove paper clips and staples prior to arrival. Plastic or metal rings, binders or clamps will not be accepted. Once the truck is full, no other paperwork will be accepted, so better come early, folks! For more information contact Kimberly Thomas at 786-573-5502 or by email at kthomas@cutlerbay-fl.gov for more information.

Last call for campers! Palmetto Bay’s popular annual event, Camping in the Park and Movie Night, will be back on February 8th and 9th at Coral Reef Park, and registration is now open. As before, guests will enjoy kayaking, fishing, animal exhibits and many other daytime activities. This year the movie, shown on the big screen when the sun goes down, will be “Toy Story 4.” The cost is $15 per tent. Pre-registration is a must, space is limited.
