Lukewarm Reaction to Stadium Project

SOMETHING TO CROW ABOUT

Yup, the voters got it done and the city charter is now changed, so that term limits will be in place for those lucky elected officials who lead the City of Pleasant Living and they’ll have authority to meddle in the hiring and firing of all department heads while in office.

Thus, for better or for worse, the city will go from a city manager form of government to a Strong Commission (defacto) form and, perhaps down the road, voters will simply forgot about the façade they have created and accept a Strong Mayor structure. much like has led county voters to its current recall crisis.

If that comes about, then our own power-hungry (“King or Queen of Nothing”) officials may finally fulfill their desires by assuming a job that should pay each of them $100,000-plus each year that they roost comfortably and collectively atop the voters who put them into office. Cluck, cluck…and tch-tch, too!

The Farmers Market is coming back to South Miami. Yes’sir, the home of the infamous disappearing $700 left over at the end of the last cycle will once again begin Saturday at the South Miami City Hall, starting December 4.

Sunset Drive was all decked out for the annual Art Show, rockin’ and rollin’ with artists and lots of local folks enjoying terrific weather and creative works from an eclectic group of designers, artists and feelgood people displaying their wares (and, like us spectators) enjoying great food and music that we also saw, heard and admired while many made a purchase or two of goodies to take back home. Besides all of those walking along the Drive, I couldn’t help, but notice so many folks patronizing local stores and eating our eclectic restaurants’ fare. This event while doin’ good for our city merchants makes us proud, as well. Congratulations to Chamber South and all who continue to make this a ‘must-visit’ attraction each year in the City of Pleasant Living.

Speaking of disappearing acts, whatever happened to those ethics violations that were filed against Vice Mayor Valerie Newman. Got to credit her with being able to maneuver this whole thing to delay it, delay it, and delay it again. But sooner or later she will get an opportunity to defend herself. PS My very secret source told me she has already been offered a deal of sorts, but turned it down.

South Miami continues to be hot- hot- hot and so is the Town Kitchen and Bar according to my on-court observers who report Miami Heat Coach Erik Spoelstra celebrated his birthday ‘over there’ with a scores of buddies. Soon thereafter, Miami Heat Prez’ Pat and Ms. Riley seen dining there as well.

More Heat: Last Monday around 11:30 a.m. while strolling on Coral Gables’ Miracle Mile, this huge limousine pulled up in front of Actors Playhouse where I couldn’t help but notice that there was a “HEAT” license plate emblazoned on this extra-long limo, and so, being a total novice at celebrity watching, I stopped in my tracks, waiting to see who might emerge from such luxurious transport. Unfortunately, no tall guys popped out of the back seat, but three unidentified Beautiful People-types (two ladies, I would guess, and a gentleman) emerged to make their way into Charlotte Bistro for a leisurely lunch.

Speaking even more of the Heat, I hear its official radio station is now 790/am (The Ticket) and will be for at least the next five years. Nice going guys. Make us proud and keep the ball bouncing for all us folks that are just beginning to understand the basics of the business of basketball, if not why the Fab Three aren’t leading the NBA East by now.

Couldn’t help notice a group on the sidewalk at SW 62 Avenue and US1, just outside South Miami Hospital, protesting circumcisions. Of course, any mom or little one opting for legal representation might find an attorney who advertises “We are a cut above.” So while we think we’re ahead for this week, we’ll cut it off (oops!).
