The Miami Jewish Film Festival (MJFF), the world’s largest Jewish film festival, is proud to announce a dedicated sidebar of free, community-driven events as part of its expansive program. Taking place January 9-23, 2025, across eight venues in Greater Miami, the Festival underscores its commitment to fostering community engagement through thought-provoking events designed to inspire, educate, and unite audiences.
Amid a concerning rise in antisemitism across the nation and within the local community, MJFF is expanding its programming to provide a welcoming space for dialogue, solidarity, and cultural celebration. These events, offered entirely free of charge, reflect the Festival’s dedication to ensuring that world-class cinema remains a shared experience for all, regardless of financial barriers.
Central to this year’s free programming is a family-friendly outdoor screening of The Goonies in honor of its 40th anniversary, promising an unforgettable evening of nostalgia and adventure under the stars. Hosted at Miami Beach’s iconic Normandy Fountain, this timeless classic invites families, kids, and friends to relive the thrilling treasure-hunting adventures of Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, and Josh Brolin.
In partnership with the Miami Jewish Abilities Alliance, MJFF will present the Florida premiere of The Ride Ahead, an award-winning film chronicling the journey of a 21-year-old living with a rare genetic disorder who joins forces with disability rights pioneers. The event will include a discussion exploring the film’s themes of independence and advocacy, offering audiences a powerful perspective on life with a disability.
Highlighting the richness of local talent, MJFF will host the world premiere of The Last Ones of Auschwitz, directed by Miami-based filmmaker Leslie Benitah. This deeply moving documentary honors the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz through the voices of Holocaust survivors, including Miami residents David Schaecter, Saul Blau, Hedy Fladell, and Irene Zisblat. Co-presented with the Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach, the screening will include a conversation with the filmmaker, offering audiences an intimate look at the survivors’ enduring legacies.
Adding an international perspective, MJFF will showcase the International Premiere of The Exile of the Musicians, a powerful exploration of Jewish musicians who fled Nazi persecution to find refuge and creative renewal in Argentina. Director Iván Cherjovsky will join the audience for a post-film discussion, hosted in collaboration with the Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach.
Expanding its innovative programming, the Festival will feature a special screening of the newly restored silent film The City Without Jews, a 101-year-old cinematic treasure. Presented in partnership with the Yiddishkayt Initiative and the University of Miami’s Leonard Miller Center for Contemporary Judaic Studies,
this unique and immersive cultural experience pairs history with a live, evocative performance by acclaimed musicians Donald Sosin and Alicia Svigals.
Celebrating the best of classic cinema, MJFF will honor the 40th anniversary of Martin Scorsese’s epic masterpiece Casino starring Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Sharon Stone. This free screening invites audiences to revisit the gripping tale of power, corruption, and ambition within Las Vegas’s mob-controlled casino empire.
All events are free and open to the public, emphasizing MJFF’s mission to bring communities together through film. By building bridges of tolerance and cultural understanding, the Festival ensures that the magic of cinema remains accessible and inclusive for all.
The 2025 Miami Jewish Film Festival will showcase 133 film premieres from 25 countries, solidifying its reputation as the preeminent Jewish film festival in the world. For the full program and ticket information, visit www.miamijewishfilmfestival.org.
