The Aventura Arts & Cultural Center is proud to offer the following live performances this April.
Apr. 3 Dance NOW! Miami Presents Program II: José Limón’s La Malinche
Apr. 8 Swing Time! The Judy Carmichael Trio
Dance NOW! returns to Aventura Arts & Cultural Center after a year’s absence from performing in front of live audiences with Dance NOW! Miami Presents Program II: José Limón’s La Malinche and other works on Saturday, April 3 at 8:30 p.m. Part of the company’s Masterpiece in Motion historic reconstruction series, La Malinche is the first piece José Limón choreographed for his own company in 1947. Based on the legendary character of an indigenous Nahua woman who played a key role in the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire, the piece speaks to colonialism, betrayal and ultimately reconciliation. In another program highlight, a new theatrical adaptation of the company’s critically acclaimed COVID-themed work, This Moment Here, will be performed for the first time in front of a live audience. The evening also features two classic works from Dance NOW! Miami’s repertory: Baumgarten’s iconic autobiographical solo Unburden, and co-artistic director Diego Salterini’s contemporary ballet duet Mitosis. Tickets are $45.
Audiences can celebrate the Great American Songbook and swing era music as the City of Aventura presents Swing Time! The Judy Carmichael Trio on Thursday, April 8 at 8 p.m. Steinway Artist and Grammy-nominated pianist, singer and songwriter, Judy Carmichael brings her distinctive sound to the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. Audiences will enjoy classics such as “I Got Rhythm,” “Why Can’t You Behave,” “Honeysuckle Rose,” “Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea,” as well as her own soulful, witty compositions.
Nicknamed “Stride” by Count Basie for the command with which she plays this technically and physically demanding jazz piano style, Carmichael is celebrating her 20th year producing and hosting her NPR Show, Judy Carmichael’s Jazz Inspired, broadcast on over 170 stations throughout North America and abroad. Tickets are $45-$49.
Seating for all the newly announced performances allows for physical distancing and tickets are available only in pods of 2 or 4 seats together. Face coverings are required at all times unless actively consuming food and beverages in designated areas. Health and safety guidelines will be followed and are available at AventuraCenter.org under the visit tab. Aventura Arts & Cultural Center’s plans for limited capacity reopening have been reviewed and approved by local government officials and will be updated as needed.
