In 2017, local artist Nicolle Cure, originally from Colombia, suffered sudden unilateral deafness, an unexpected incident that led to a diagnosis of Ménière’s disease, a chronic vestibular (inner ear) disorder with debilitating symptoms such as pressure and ringing in the ears (Tinnitus), dizzy spells (Vertigo), hearing loss, and balance problems. There is no known cure for Ménière’s disease.
Nicolle’s art series, The Colors of Sound, explores the relationship between sound and life, an invitation to consider how we make sense of our surroundings through what we can hear. When her partner, a musician and sound engineer, used his recording equipment to display the sound waves and frequencies she was no longer able to hear, Nicolle was inspired to visually illustrate and ‘capture’ sound.
Over the course of her artistic career, Nicolle has created several art collections, for the most part, drawn from life experiences. Each particular series consists of works depicting a wide range of emotions and incidents, from life to death, sorrow and solace to extreme joy and new beginnings.
Nicolle has partnered with the Hearing Health Foundation and Vestibular Disorders Organization (VeDA) for several years, where she donates her time and art to benefit their fundraising initiatives. As a result of her work raising awareness about hearing loss and invisible disabilities, she was awarded the Leadership Scholarship by Americans for the Arts in 2018. Several of her paintings have also been featured in the “IMAGEN y PALABRA” Book highlighting Latin American contemporary artists.
Nicolle’s art has been showcased at Art Basel Miami and other art fairs in South Korea, China, and Colombia. She has been featured in several magazines, blogs, and other publications focused on fine art and hearing health. Her artwork can be found in West Elm stores, Showfields, and PxP Contemporary art gallery.
